The sharp tone fell short when Luffy gently placed his other hand on Law’s forehead, pushing up his dark hair. The younger captain calmly stared into Law’s shocked eyes, studying them in silence.
Law’s worn out heart was betraying him.
After so many losses, so many heart breaks, Law never seemed to learn his lesson.

Summary
Monkey D. Luffy was cute. This much was known—this was an undeniable, immutable fact. It was also largely suspected to be a ruse of some sort. The squishy-cheeked, beaming face on the wanted posters was largely considered by the more discerning members of Law’s profession to be incapable of the infamous, impossible deeds that Straw Hat Luffy has committed.
Or: Luffy is cute, Law has incorrect assumptions, and then a crisis.

Luffy gasps delightedly, head wiping around to stare up at Whitebeard with wide, excited eyes. “Ace tried to kill you too?!” he shouts. Behind him, the party doesn’t necessarily stop so much as pause, focusing in on the growing spectacle before them. Oblivious, Luffy continues on. “How long?”
Whitebeard looks down at the young pirate captain that’s practically vibrating in place. Then he looks to the blond revolutionary that is also staring up at him, gaze considering and keen. Then to his second division commander who now has his face in his hands, ears red where they poke out of his hair. Finally, he glances at the rest of his children, out of loop and confused, yet intrigued, nonetheless.

Garp thought he was quite brilliant when, in an effort to discourage Ace and Sabo’s ambitions of piracy, he gives them custody of his new baby grandson. After all, the two might have been teenage delinquents, but even they wouldn’t actually go out to sea with a baby in their care, right?
Hint: he is very, very wrong.
(An AU where Luffy is born 16 years after Ace instead of 3, and Sabo remains with Ace on Mt. Corvo instead of trying to set sail on his own.)

Summary
When they’re on the forecastle, with the helm just behind them and the figurehead casting them further in shadow, Usopp calls, “Raise the sails!”
Luffy’s gasp next to his ear is the best part of his entire day.
The sails unfold in a great rolling crash of canvas. Even the striped gaff swings out, catching the wind. The whole sloop gives a powerful lurch as if she’s eager to sprint out of port on the back of whatever gale blows along next.
And painted on the foresail, bold and bright and proud, is a grinning Jolly Roger in a yellow straw hat.
“That’s mine,” Luffy whispers, hushed and awed.
“Told you so,” Usopp says smugly.

Law isn't quite sure yet, what he'll do with this fruit. Maybe he'll wait, maybe he'll see how things play out. The world may still yet surprise him.
It will have to try a little harder, if it wants to top Strawhat Luffy at that.

Luffy and his crew are given a devil fruit as a thank you from an island they saved. When the allies meet up, Luffy shows Law the fruit. Law recognizes it and they have a heart to heart - not by Law's choice - about it.

This is an AU if Luffy was raised as a marine by Garp and remembers the secret codes and such from him.
I highly recommend reading the series in order, except The world doesn't deserve you, unless you want to read a canon divergence fic when the ASL Brothers were still kids on dawn.

Summary
Garp wanted Luffy and Ace to be Marines, so he taught them what a good marine should know and how to do it. While Ace and Luffy obviously didn't become marines, that knowledge was, literally, pounded into their heads. With Ace captured and set for execution, Luffy uses that knowledge to bust his brother out of prison.
Or: Why Garp shouldn't have taught an upcoming rookie what Marine codes meant because all it led to was the chaos a pirate could use it for.
