Suddenly, he no longer feels suffocated. The alpha releases him, his grin flashing in the gloom. He laughs into Shane's pale face, who is struggling to swallow air.
"Haha. No. Killing you is no fun at all. I'll reward you in a different way."
Piercing pain and tears of despair. The alpha bites into the soft spot between shoulder and neck. Against Shane's will, due to revenge against his father, he is marked by the alpha who he is never destined to be together with.

Shane and Ilya are still hosting J.J. after a dinner party when J.J. bemoans his wasted efforts in trying to find Shane a man. Shane fills J.J. in on some of his encounters while Ilya watches them from the kitchen. Things spiral.
