Summary
All in all, Arthur was one of those men about whom it could be said that their heart was in the right place, although he did take great pains to hide it. Still, the core of decency made Merlin endure the thick layers of arrogance (and their thin crispy crust of arseholery) with more patience than he’d ever thought possible. There was indeed a promise of greatness about Arthur that Merlin was willing to believe in.

Summary
The sob that escaped him was a tiny thread of sound, little more than an embellishment upon the air. He did not wail. It was too big for that, too much, all the more painful for being unexpected. Not Arthur's betrothal, but his own reaction to it. It was as if all the nebulous uncertainty of the day had crystallised into a blade.
Worse, he had no one to blame but himself. He had never told Arthur how he felt. It had always seemed like a step too far, and now it was too late.
Tomorrow, he would pick up the pieces of himself and find the strength to bear the scars of it. He would be the friend Arthur needed, and he would pretend that was enough.
Tonight, he mourned.
------

Summary
Perhaps he could have ignored the glittering motes of magic that danced through the room. He could have blamed this strange place of power for their presence, but he could not deny the truth that made itself plain before him, painted in blue eyes turned to bright, brazen gold.
Merlin was a sorcerer.
---
When Sir Leon is gravely injured, Arthur, Merlin and the knights seek shelter in an old Sanctuary cave, but the magic within is far from powerless, and the goddess is always watching. Can they overcome their fears and find their way back to freedom, or will they be lost forever in their own enmity?

Summary
He saw Arthur burst from the forest, wide-eyed and pale-faced. Sweat plastered his hair to his forehead, and fear locked his expression in its clutches. One hand stretched out as if to grab him. So near and yet so far.
The moment fled. Gravity won, and there wasn't even time for Merlin to cry out as the bandit's weight dragged him over the cliff and into the stormy waters below.
****
When Merlin is hurt during a bandit attack, Arthur finds himself torn between the longings of his heart and his duties to the crown.
