This is what Rumi knows to be true: Zoey and Mira don’t want her.
Zoey and Mira don’t want her, and she does not want herself, and so she goes to the only other person who might.
(She always found herself jealous of euthanized dogs)
Or
As Zoey and Mira walk towards their impending doom, into Gwi-Ma's gaping maw, the entire world waits with bated breath for a hero. For someone to come with a song, a light in the dark, to save the day. But, no one does. And as destiny falls apart and fate screams in disapproval, the Honmoon reaches out to fix a cosmic error. “You are, as usual, super literal and not wrong,” Mira says, tipping her head back against the couch. “Things have been picking up, and we should talk about it before we get much further.”
“I’ve never had sex with two people at once,” Zoey offers, scratching her chin thoughtfully. “Have you?"

Summary
This is what happened: years ago, Mira and Zoey had someone, and then they lost her.
It happens, sometimes.
People disappear.
But years ago, Mira and Zoey had someone, and then they lost her. Then, they thought that they might have found her again – because Rumi was everything they once had, because she was the third hunter, because her soul was bound to theirs like they were to each other.
They never asked, in the end.
What had happened that made the other woman slip away like she did.
But it never did feel completely right, after, despite everything. Because Rumi was there but she also wasn’t, because she laughed and joked with them but never quite fully, because she would lean into their touch sometimes and then shrink away from it the next moment. Because she had walls all around her, and rarely, if ever, took them down.
Rumi had always been scared of something.

(Or: the bond between the hunters tells them of each others emotions, each others pain. Rumi, naturally, decides that her sins are hers alone to carry, that she cannot burden the other two with them. But such secrets rarely stay hidden.)
