This 'arrangement' he has with Shadow—sneaking him in, finding places where they won't be eavesdropped on or discovered—goes against that very principle. In his heart, he knows this is all wrong.

Summary
When Shadow and Sonic are sent by Rouge to find evidence of wrongdoing by a deep sea mining and research corporation, things are already tense between them. They haven’t been sent to work together for months and the last mission ended in disaster. This mission appears no different, starting off on the wrong foot and only getting worse as they enter Sonic’s worst nightmare—a month underwater and nowhere to run.
When they find an unexpected stowaway and creepy, mysterious things start happening to the crew on the mining station, they’re going to have to put aside their differences and finally confront feelings that may have been burning under the surface for both of them in order for them to survive.

As a renowned monster hunter, of course Shadow would venture out to an old backwater town to put an end to yet another vermin scourging the land. It was his job to, and hell was he good at it. This year… something had to give. He was going to explode and let out a bunch of stuff that scared him and would chase Sonic out of his life faster than he could blink. There was stuff that was weird and bizarre and Shadow didn’t even know the true depth of what all he was experiencing. Something must give or Shadow was going to do something indecent.
