"We can build onto the Hail Mary— a spaceship large enough to carry you, me, and other scientists. We go to Earth with you," Rocky trills. Ryland can't believe his ears. Rocky's carapace tilts in the way that means he's smiling. "We live on Earth, learn from the humans, and return in our own time."

I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

Chase is technically underage, he’s a year away from being able to drink but the bartender didn’t bother to check his ID. Chase has always looked a little older than he was, it works in his favor now.
Nobody at a hero bar like this would assume he was so young.
“How the fuck do you think that?” Chase asks, spits. His hands still shake with the memory of it. The beer in his hand shakes with the tremors of his hands. “How the fuck do you do it?”
Mechaman sighs, deep, disappointed. He leans back, taking his whiskey with him.
The rest of the Brave Brigade was downstairs, drinking in victory, dancing with the other heroes, celebrating.

Except this time, Sam doesn’t pick up on what starts the fight, too focused on figuring out how to derive the stupid equation. He only looks up when John’s voice rises and his fist swings towards his eldest son’s face.
Sam lets out a shout of disapproval, but it’s either ignored or just not heard, and John’s fist makes contact with the side of Dean’s face in a rather unflattering way. His older brother doesn’t even stumble at the punch, just readjusts so that he doesn’t fall over from the force.

There was only one thing Scarecrow wanted to inflict. Fear.
In his head, Dick was grateful he was the one in the hot seat. He always had a harder time watching his loved ones be in pain than taking the pain himself. That face was one of the leading reasons behind almost everything he does. Furthermore, he and Bruce have been testing his level of resistance to Scarecrow's fear gas, and compared to the others- even Bruce- he was the best option for this. Right?

OR: Scarecrow makes a fear toxin specifically for Nightwing, who seems to be immune to his normal batch. And maybe Dick could handle a newer version of the gas... if there wasn't also a device attached to his head that analyzed his thoughts to make him face his greatest fears...
What's worse is that his family, who have basically shut him out since his return from Spyral- from the dead- is there to witness his fall.

Dick swallowed, making an aborted gesture over at him. "So what are you a ghostbuster or something?"
"Oh my god," Jason groaned to himself, instantly turning and walking over to the hole leading out, preparing his grapple so he could leave. He did not have time for this.

He’s been staring at the door for twenty minutes, instinctively ducking down under the window every time he hears a shuffling noise inside. Phones keep ringing, and a gruff voice keeps answering them, the conversations muffled and short. November is just settling in and the chill in the air is biting this year, its sharp teeth sinking into Dean’s skin like a needle weaving stitches.
The wind curls up around him and he shivers. It’s getting to the point where a worn, thrift store jacket just doesn't cut it anymore. He sighs out through his nose, feels cold air refill it, and lifts a hand. His brittle fingers curl into a fist. He knocks.
When Bobby opens the door, he doesn’t quite manage to hide his surprise in time. Dean feels something sink low in his stomach.
“Dad didn’t tell you I was coming?” he asks, but it’s really more of a statement. A fear put into words.

Bruce doesn’t know what’s wrong with his child, but he’s pretty sure kids aren’t meant to work like this.
From the day he had looked up into the tops of the circus tent and saw a frightened mirror image of a boy who had just experienced the worst day of his life, Bruce had instantly gone into emergency mode.
The Gotham PD had wanted to pass the boy off into the care of the circus. The circus had mumbled underneath their breaths about superstitions, about not having a boy like that with them, about not being able to handle something like Dick. So GCPD, not knowing what to do, had started talking about one of the handful of overburdened boy homes that handles a majority of Gotham’s unlucky orphans.
All the while, the camera lights flash bright and loud, wanting to know everything.
Bruce couldn’t let that happen.
Not then, not ever again.
