Mike’s jittery foot-taps started just as he replied, “Did you eat breakfast?”
“What?” Max blinked, then glared. “How is that any of your business?”
For a moment, she was sure Mike would glare in return, say something fiery or insulting or mocking then they’d both go back to how things were – ignoring each other until interaction was absolutely necessary.
But that didn’t happen.
Grief can cause distance between close friends and bring closer the distant ones.
Max should’ve known that Mike Wheeler can’t help but meddle with her business. But as their reluctant friendship blossoms into profound understanding, Max is amazed at how much they have in common and how much this friendship feels like something she can enjoy, instead of something she has to endure.

Summary
Mike was totally freaking out.
Max stood in front of him, her face one he had never seen before, full of vulnerability and pain and so much terror. This was not what the redhead's face was supposed to look like, it should be filled with annoyance after he said something stupid or with those silly love-struck eyes she made every time Lucas walked into a room.
There was so much blood that it made Wheeler almost pass out, that only not happening because of the adrenaline that was being pumped into his bloodstream.

After Starcourt, Steve ends up sleeping at Dustin’s house. It happens by accident: Mrs. Henderson drives him home because his parents don’t show up at the mall, and when Dustin asks if his parents are even in town at all, he casually admits that no, they aren’t, and actually he doesn’t know if or when they’ll be back. He hadn’t planned on telling the truth, but he’s currently suffering his third concussion in just as many years, and putting together a believable lie requires a few more brain cells than he currently possesses. The words come tumbling out before he can stop himself.

There is not much in the way of plot, more just a bit of introspection from Dustin about how Steve treats his own life.
This fic takes place after the events season 4 is over, during which Steve obtains no further injuries and things are generally fine.
