Balancing himself with one knee on the seat, Pete straightens up, head bent downwards so it doesn’t collide with the roof of the truck, and unbuckles his belt.
The buckle clinks; Jake watches with curiosity, tilting his head to the side. Logic escapes him at the moment, but his impeccable flirting abilities are intact as ever.
“Hm, taking your pants off already?” A practiced grin shines across his face. “That’s a personal record for me.”
The tip of Pete’s tongue peeks through his teeth as he concentrates. As light as a feather, he slides the belt under Jake’s leg, managing so without causing a new burst of pain.

Ice clenches his jaw like he’s so frustrated having to spell it out. “Mitchell. Stop it. I know. And it’s fine. It’s not the first workplace crush I’ve dealt with. But we both know this,” Ice gestures between them with a doubtful grimace. “It’s not healthy.”
Wait. What?
“Workplace…crush,” Maverick repeats, stuck on the words, mental gears turning in slow, rusty clicks as he plays back the conversation. Ice accused Maverick of being more interested in him than Amy. Maverick thought he meant as a rival, a sparring partner. But he meant romantically? That can’t be right.
“Stop it,” Ice says with a roll of his eyes like he thinks Maverick is messing with him. “There’s no point denying it. You like me.”
Maverick stares at him with his mouth agape, unable to formulate words. The struggling gears in his mind have ground to a halt.
“It’s really obvious, man,” Ice continues, tone softening. “You’re like a kid with puppy love. You’re always trying to get under my skin, get my attention. It’s flattering, in a way. But I’ll pass."
“You think I like you?”
