I loved this! I've barely seen anything of Karen in fic. The headcanon about ex-hosts' hearing loss and various ways of marking their identity? So, so good.
Karen being overwhelmed by Aftran but recognizing the ways they've both changed is really well done. She doesn't forgive Aftran, and they're not friends - but like the last line says, it's a start.
like I mentioned in the Notes section, I can't take full credit for all the ex-host worldbuilding, but I'm glad you liked that! Cultural shifts post-war were barely touched on in book 54, and there's so much potential there.
I'm also glad you liked Karen's perspective, and the ending. I wanted to give this story a hopeful vibe, but without making it seem like Karen needs to forgive Aftran right away—or ever—in order to keep healing.
