re 502 errors -- one place I consistently notice them happening is when I download a fic to my Kindle. I download directly from the Kindle browser, and use MOBI format. For less-popular, or very new, fics this seems to fail the first time and be fine the second. My tentative theory is that the download doesn't exist until someone asks for it ... if that's the case, might be good to have an informative message that will ask user to try again. (It always works fine second time!)
You're right! It happens the first time a work (or the latest version of a work) is downloaded. We believe we've isolated the problem and we have a fix coming out in our next code deploy. In the meantime, apologies for the inconvenience!
Using the Kindle web browser! Go to the AO3 page for the fic, click on Download and then MOBI format ... it goes straight onto the Kindle without the need for synchronising with laptop / PC. (But as per bug report, if it's the very first time that MOBI file has been requested you might get a 502 -- just try again and it's fine)
