The beauty might not be pure suffering, but there’s an element to it that will be significant for Joe. Because it’s a divine blessing Joe is more aware of beauty as a concept, including the impact it has on others and their reaction to it. Basically, if someone is reacting to his appearance he will be aware of the reason. Obliviousness isn’t an option anymore. Watching the interactions between Garment and Flechette with Aphrodite’s blessing would have given Joe a very different picture of what was actually going on. It’s not just beauty, it’s awareness of the impact of beauty and Joe is going to have to deal with that.
