Comment on The Good, the Bad and the Igloo

  1. CYM, this is so funny and absolutely adorable but also had ALL the feels. Yassen is such a shit. "Build this shelter at gunpoint, Alex!" followed by "yes, I knew it would fail, but it was an important lesson and it's built character." SO Yassen. SO hilarious. I also LOVE the hints of Yassen's real reasons for being here and how he may have the tiniest soft spot for Alex... the idea that he packed in a hurry, he brought Coke, he'd already killed his employer... (love the shoutout to that too, by the way, Yassen has a concerning habit of that XD) Yassen was worried. The spaghetti western shoutouts were hilarious and I really liked the bits about Ian - clearly uncomfortable and the sting hasn't yet gone away, but Yassen seems to be at the point where he cares a little more about the repercussions...

Alex mulled this over. Yassen volunteering information about John Rider right after Alex had reminded him he had murdered Ian sounded like Yassen's version of an apology. While the little piece of John's life was welcome, Ian was still dead and Alex was still in the tender loving care of MI6. Not to mention their current situation./The convoluted apology was not accepted. This was sad but also very funny, loved it!

And then Alex getting his own back by annoying Yassen, but then the very sweet (bittersweet, and I really liked the callback to Style) moment at the end where he says he doesn't want to kill Yassen anymore... AWW. Theirs is such a strange relationship but it is endlessly compelling. I love how you write their relationship, Cym, this was lovely!

    1. Thank you so much for this insightful and lovely comment Olya ^^

Of course Yassen has a tiny, Alex-shaped light in his cold, cold heart. That's why we love him, isn't it? XD

Yassen killing all of his non-Scorpia employers in canon somehow amuses me to no ends, so of course it had to be mentioned!

And the line from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Yassen that quoted immediately came to me when I read that prompt (it just seemed to fit Yassen building something 'with' Alex so well 😅) so that's how the spaghetti westerns invited themselves in this fic and in John's life. As I told Fred, I now headcanon John watching Once Upon the Time in the West in Paris with Yassen, and Yassen finding The Man with the Harmonica an awesome inspiration for his own mysterious, deadly competent and man-of-few-words persona XD

Ian was mentioned because I can't imagine Alex being capable of ignoring that Yassen made him an orphan anew at that point. Not when he's all alone and at MI6's mercy.
I also like the idea of Alex not wanting to kill Yassen not because Alex isn't capable of killing anybody yet, but because he realises Yassen does care and wants to protect him in his own, twisted, trauma induced way. Even if Yassen's interpretation of 'caring for a teenager' is an extremely personal one XD

And obviously, the general idea was just to have fun 😆

Loved your thoughts, as always! Thanks for sharing them Olya! 💜
