    I imagine that years later when Warlock is out on his own some old person will occasionally make a comment along the lines of what a good job his parents did to raise such a nice boy and he'll correct them and tell them that his parents didn't raise him. They left that to the staff.

    You nailed the characterization here. It's clear that Harriet wanted to be the kind of woman who would be good at kids but wasn't and Thaddeus is clueless. The scene where Harriet is uselessly hovering around while Warlock cries does a great job of showing us her character with just a short scene and the bit with Thaddeus a few years later does the same.

    Then there's how A&C are sharing a flat as the two tutors but each is refusing to admit that they are living together. OR that they seem to have missed that there is no reason for them to live together since they both have residences in London and there's no need to actually live at whatever address they gave the Dowlings. It's just to maintain their characters as the tutors, right? Nothing to see here.

    It's painful to see how Warlock grows so skittish around his parents and adults in general even having had the love and care of Nanny Astoreth and Brother Francis. That's something I don't recall seeing before in fics like this.
