If any of the staff here is familiar with DeviantArt.com, this site has a great inbox layout from a users point of view, the best of any site I've ever used. Messages are automatically sorted into different categories and folders in your inbox. Feedback messages are about faves and comments, Hot Topics are about site news, DevWatch lets you know when someone you watch adds new art, and Notes are private messages from other users. Perhaps a layout similar to this would work. I don't know how complicated that would be to do programming wise on your end, though. It's just an idea I wanted to throw out there.
