I have a question regarding the referrer thing: does this mean that if I link a fic in a locked entry on LJ, the link to the entry will show up as the referrer if people click it? Obviously the author won't be able to read my locked entry if we're not mutual friends but will they be able to know I linked their fic? If so, is there anyway to prevent your link showing up as a referrer other than using an anonymizer (anonym.to or nullreferrer etc?) and will you be telling people how to use those options if they want to link fic without being recorded as the referrer when the user stats page goes live? Thanks.
Sorry for the delay in responding to you – your comment got overlooked as the post was a couple of weeks old. As a result we've now replied to you via your support ticket, but reposting here just in case anyone else is interested in the answer.
Yes, you’re right that referrers will potentially show who is linking to your work: they’ll show the url the link is coming from, even if that link is actually a locked post on Livejournal or similar, unless the referring site doesn’t provide referring information. There isn’t a simple way for us to prevent this, but we’ve taken your feedback into account and we’ll be posting details on how to hide or anonymise links when we launch this feature.
Referrers will be registered when someone clicks a link and arrives at the site. This won’t be retroactive, so if you posted a link a year ago then it won’t show up in the stats unless somebody goes back to your old post and follows the link.
Thanks for your questions! User feedback like this is really helpful in assisting us to design our features and the accompanying information.
