He wanted to live wherever Elsa went in her mind when she sang. He loved to watch her disappear inside herself like there was no place more beautiful. He had never been able to do the same because he had never felt inhabitable. Her smallest immensities outweighed his grandest performances as a man worth loving.
Then the villa was completed, and the singing stopped.
"Are you prepared to live alone on this island, Eugene?"
"Absolutely."
Two years ago, architect Elsa Moretti designed Eugene Fitzherbert's dream villa on a remote island in Tuscany. He was what she had once been: closed and uneasy in his own skin beneath his artifice. He sought isolation to separate from the world that had ostracized and disillusioned him, but she knew, at the cellular level, that his fantasy would break him. Villa del Sole was built anyway, and with it, her regret. Now, in the heat of August, on an empty terrace among geraniums, they have the chance to reckon with what was created—and what was not.

Eugene sank his hands into his pockets and tucked his lips inward, biting them. A white-gold strand whipped across Elsa's temple, dancing in the wind. He remembered the way her strands had bannered her face in snapshots from Athens, where the better portion of their honeymoon now lived only in the iCloud he never cleared. She had laughed so freely then, chasing her windblown hair with her fingers while he stood behind the camera. Her fingers were chasing it now.
The corner of his bitten mouth twitched, resisting a smile.
Elsa looked up, meeting his eyes with her own, and asked the impossible: "How are you?"
What he heard was: "Did you survive me?"
A wedding in New Orleans forces two former spouses back into the same orbit after six years of silence. Beneath polite smiles and careful conversation breathes a love still intimate enough to unravel them both.

Elsa licked her quivering bottom lip as she julienned her red bell peppers with glazed eyes. She felt Eugene's hand underneath her dress even though there was no hand—felt the particular humiliation of a body opening to fantasy like a fist unfurling. The sound of her husband laughing in the living room did nothing to break it.
Elsa Westergaard and Eugene Fitzherbert become cousins-by-marriage during the summer of 1989. Their blossoming friendship arouses suspicion from their unfaithful spouses, who had abandoned a family wedding to have sex with each other in a car. To get back at them, Elsa and Eugene pretend to have an affair, only to genuinely fall in love.

Summary
After prisoner Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert was exiled to the Enchanted Forest by a neighboring kingdom, the Northuldra learned to tolerate his presence while Elsa healed his wounds with her magic. The passing seasons reshaped all of their relationships with him in ways no one expected. He internalized what they taught him, including the meaning of ekstasis, and Elsa, by way of being entirely herself, reminded him that he, too, had a self worth honoring.
This year, in the season of fireweed flowers, the various expressions of love become a lesson for Elsa that he's eager to teach.
