Summary
Avery stands there for several seconds before hesitating, then asking again, “Derlord?”
The armor lurches forward, and the angles, the way his head lolls slightly—everything about it seems uncanny. The thought of a puppet on a string comes back to Avery, and it certainly matches. Derlord’s legs angle awkwardly, as if he’s forgotten how to walk. His head bobs as he steps forward and the red crest of his armor droops. His arms hang at his sides and his shoulders jerk wildly as he steps, shaking his arms like boughs.
“… Derek?”
The voice answers isn’t Derek. It chills Avery to the bones, and he freezes. It’s deep, and it rings inside of Avery’s head.
“Avery.”
That isn’t Derlord.

Or; The King in Yellow possesses Derlord after he says the chant, and the King decides that he isn’t just going to let Avery go. Just because Avery can’t be his vessel doesn’t mean that Avery can’t be his.

Summary
He looks around as he climbs off of the… bed?
He’s in a bedroom. The bed is big enough to hold at least a few prop all at once, with silk sheets and soft pillows. The sheets are an opulent red, richer than velvet, but the sight of it just reminds Avery of blood. The drapes around the bed are a golden color that shifts under the light from a large window, and Avery knows immediately that he’ll escape through there.
The sight of forget-me-nots in gold and white vases on the bedside tables makes Avery feel dizzy. He can practically feel the weight of them on his hands, heavier than any sword or promise.
Avery glances down at his hands, and he’s surprised to find a robe draped against his skin. It’s the same golden color as the bed curtains.

Or; Avery is brought to the King in Yellow’s new kingdom. Avery’s not ready to live like this, but he’s not given a single option in it. And the King is ready to prove that to him. However he sees is fit.

Slimes can’t die of old age. Avery can’t picture an eternity of this. The thought makes his chest feel tight, and he feels tears dripping down his cheeks as he tries to pretend he hadn’t even had it. Avery doesn’t want to be trapped here with Hastur until the end of time. Avery just hopes that the King gets tired of Avery. Then at least he’ll be free. Death... death would be more merciful than thousands of years of this.
“I cannot recall asking. You will worship me, my vessel. You will do it willingly, or I will make you.”
Avery’s tears fall as he shakily flips open the book.
“Page one. Begin from the top.”
