Summary
Jules and Butch always went together like C4 and a match. Locked inside the dystopian hellscape that was Vault 101, that was something of a problem. Out in the wastes though? Not so much.
Fresh from being mind-fucked by Dr. Stanislaus Braun, Jules is struggling to regain not only her sense of self, but her handle on the friendship she's formed with her former childhood nemesis and fellow vault hoodlum. She can't help being in love with the make-believe version of Butch Braun created for her anymore than real-life Butch can help NOT being that guy.
Can their relationship survive and thrive after nineteen years of rivalry, one extremely embarrassing simulation, and two (not really) unrequited crushes? Only time will tell.

When he sat back up, she wore a soft smile. “I know you’ll say I sound dumb, that fate’s not real, but I like to think it’s what led me to you. When I needed someone to keep me safe, to help me.”
“Mmm,” he grumbled. He wasn’t sure what he thought about fate anymore. Was it his fate to end up like this— a leashed dog for whoever held his contract? He didn’t want to believe that. But the longer he spent with her, with the frustratingly optimistic vault dweller, the more he wondered if something had led her to him.
At first, he felt as though she was brought to him as some sort of punishment for his two-hundred years of sins. It was torture, following her around being a do-gooder while the wasteland threw every bad thing it could at her. And then the feelings started. He thought he’d traded a long list of abusive employers for an employer that would lead to his ultimate undoing, that she’d unravel his psyche and make him go mad.
Ex-vaultie, still-too-good-for-the-wasteland Ana isn't quite sure what fate has in store for her anymore, but she's willing to keep going in spite of it all.
