When he sat back up, she wore a soft smile. “I know you’ll say I sound dumb, that fate’s not real, but I like to think it’s what led me to you. When I needed someone to keep me safe, to help me.”
“Mmm,” he grumbled. He wasn’t sure what he thought about fate anymore. Was it his fate to end up like this— a leashed dog for whoever held his contract? He didn’t want to believe that. But the longer he spent with her, with the frustratingly optimistic vault dweller, the more he wondered if something had led her to him.
At first, he felt as though she was brought to him as some sort of punishment for his two-hundred years of sins. It was torture, following her around being a do-gooder while the wasteland threw every bad thing it could at her. And then the feelings started. He thought he’d traded a long list of abusive employers for an employer that would lead to his ultimate undoing, that she’d unravel his psyche and make him go mad.
Ex-vaultie, still-too-good-for-the-wasteland Ana isn't quite sure what fate has in store for her anymore, but she's willing to keep going in spite of it all.

After 19 years of living it, these roles were all either had been to each other, all that they could be; a script as concrete as the halls they travelled through each and everyday on strict schedule. There was a sense of enjoyment Butch had grown to anticipate from this specific social designation, more deep seeded than that of his G.O.A.T results; the scrutinizing glance of a passerby's eyes landing upon him, his name, supplied with a selection of choice descriptors meant to paint him as the 'tenacious delinquent' character, travelling in whispers across the confines of the vault—all in recognition. But Van struggled to find his lines after all this time, unwilling to give him the satisfaction, intentionally or not.
Yet here they are, Butch freeing Van of his silence strand by strand wrapped tight around his fist.

I am writing sporadically, but this story is pretty emotionally taxing, both for you to read and for me to write. I have been going months between updating and I don't think it fair to new readers to get so invested in something that isn't complete, so I just felt it better to let everyone know. The Lone Wanderer is a figure almost out of the comic books. The hero of the Capitol Wastes, who brought Aqua Pura to the Capitol Wastes. Who is credited with the fall of The Pitt, of Paradise Falls, and the Enclave. They are a mysterious figure rumored to still wander the wastes in their Vault 101 jumpsuit and Tunnel Snakes jacket with a baseball bat resting across their shoulders as they try to find the next group that needs rescuing. The identity of this hero has become something of a secret, partially cultivated and partially because many didn't know that they had passed through their towns to do good until the tales had reached them on the radio.
Only a trusted few know the name of the individual, let alone their face. Because Blair Birmingham is no saint, and they're the first to tell you this. The Minuteman is the last person that anybody would believe was the legendary hero. Crass, nihilistic, and a self-proclaimed bad parent. But once upon a time, she was a bright-eyed girl taking her first steps into the wastes in search of her father. She didn't know what laid before her, she had no way to know who and what she would become, or what she would lose.
And they wouldn't have it any other way.
