Summary
It was said that Soul Marks were something that had always existed in human beings, though no one seemed to know how or why; dark pigmentations of the skin that existed from birth, shifting by the age of puberty to spell out clear words.
Usually, these read one of two things, depending on the course one’s soul would take: the name of one’s soulmate… or one’s last words.
The fact Philip Lombard had never had a Mark that he could distinguish of either type was incurable rare within itself, but, in his mind, suggested one of two things: either he was never to love… or he was to take a life.
By the time he was seventeen, it became clear that for Philip Lombard, both were to be true.

“I know what I am.” His tone had turned deep with an edge she did not like. “I always knew it would catch up with me.” She swallowed, once again envious of his ability to accept the hand of God without repentance and without fear. Almost wistfully, his gaze left her as he turned on his heel, his voice becoming soft, as though reaching a spiritual realisation as he took a long pull of smoke into his lungs. “And here it is…”

Summary
“Y’think I’m smiling because I wouldn’t do such inhuman things to you?” he taunted silkily, with a smile that could have been misconstrued as harmless…if his eyes had no been so stark with intent.
“You think those stockings’d save you?”He admonished her slowly with an air of such arrogance that she felt breathless with both outrage and arousal, firing her up suddenly with desire to beat him at his own game...Time to don the devil’s armour, Vera.
The blood began seeping from a single red spot on his bicep. She felt dizzy at the sight of it, knowing it had been her doing... “What was that for?! I’m not the one who’s going to hurt ya’, woman!”
With a wistful smile, she admired him one last time. “I believe you." In the corner of her eye, the ghost of Cyril beckoned her from the break of the surf. “But perhaps you should have.”

Summary
Could she be a light now dimmed, not yet accustomed to Philip’s great darkness? (The very same darkness he claimed to embrace as though it were the wings of Saint Peter). Or… was she something else? Was she just adjusting to his darkness… or was this new Mark in fact a sign she had finally ascended from her own darkness and had found a guiding light?
It could be that Philip Lombard was her light… as what if a light did not need to be pure, or even clean, to be a guide all the same? After all, the dimmest of candlelight could be enough to bring one out of the darkest tunnel.

Summary
She limps slowly to the kitchen counter, using anything she passes as a crutch – the wall, the table, the countertops, leaving bloody fingerprints as she goes by. She reaches out for the unopened bottle of champagne, struggling with the cork, until her teeth clamp around it. The cork loosens then pops.
'Congratulations' she thinks. You make such a beautiful bride.

Summary
Vera is already in too deep. She sees that now, quite clearly. She is in too deep to escape unhurt when he grows bored of her, as surely he will. Her emotions are too deeply engaged to make it a clean break. She scrambles for something to say, something to offer him. Some way to appease him. There’s nothing. All her usual lies are unacceptable now, and the truth will make her too vulnerable.

Summary
As she trembled on the bathroom floor, it came home to roost that it was precisely one of her feverish, passionate nights that had landed her here; panic-stricken, breathless, and terrified.
The realisation came, as icy as the idea of impending death had on Soldier Island, only this was somehow much, much worse. But if Vera had to lose Philip, she would go down fighting.

My alternate ending for the 2015 adaptation of what is literally my favorite novel in the world, after I fell completely and utterly in love with it and Vera and Philip's relationship.
