That was why Mac was done pretending – he would put on a smile when at work and if anybody asked him, he would reply it was all good – but then, in the evenings, sitting on the couch in Jack’s apartment, surrounded by memories of Jack, Mac wouldn’t hide, letting the tears fall freely while his chest burned with guilt and regret.
Or the one where Jack is gone hunting Kovacs and Mac really isn't doing as well as he'd like everyone to believe.

“Hey, Mr. Dalton,” he said when he reached the headstone, patting the top of it in greeting. “It’s been a while, huh?” He sat down on his butt in the grass, which was wet with evening dew, and leaned his back against cool granite. Cracking the bottle open, he took a healthy swig and almost gagged at the burn when he swallowed—hard liquor was never really been his thing, but it did make him feel warmer. Logically he knew that wasn’t what’s happening, but he took comfort in it anyway. “I don’t know if Jack came to see you before he left, but in case he didn’t... he’s gone. And I don’t know where he is, or when... if he’ll come home.”

Lethargic. His skin felt damp, he didn’t know if he was sweating or bleeding. He felt too cold to be sweating. “But I need help. Can you…”
Mac closed his eyes. Can you what? Find me? Not leave me? Just talk to me?
The voicemail beeped, marking an end to the message.
Mac redialed.

Bozer’s dark eyes went shiny with tears, and for a second he didn’t look like he was able to speak. Then, so quietly Mac had to strain to hear him: “He’s gone, Mac.”
On the outside Mac blinked in confusion, but inside his anxiety had ramped up to full-blown panic. “What? Gone where?”
Bozer shook his head, glancing at the floor and sniffling. “No, man. He’s… gone gone. There was an explosion. You got thrown clear, but Jack… didn’t.” His next admission was a whisper. “It was so bad all they found was a tooth.”
(Also known as: Mac wakes up in the hospital with no memory of the mission that claimed his partner's life. Refusing to believe the worst, he embarks on his own investigation to find out what happened, recruits some unlikely allies, and finds out there are much worse fates than death.)

Mac and Jack were forced to take a vacation to recover after the last mission went terribly wrong. Jack followed Mac to his house to spend the time off work together.
Mac could never forgive himself for what has happened even though Jack did before it even happened in the first place.
We all know our Mac, always logical and if compartmentalisation was a sport he'd win the Olympics. But this time I wanted to find something that could force out emotion. Not intellectualised - like I'd imagine he'd try to keep them - but messy and honest. -
