Since boarding the mining ship Red Dwarf, he'd dedicated every waking moment to the company, to slowly climbing the echelons and earning his metaphorical 'golden ticket' -- the shiny, glorious rank of Navigation Officer. It was the whole reason he got up in the morning. It was the whole reason he was still alive.
