    The spirit frowned and stood up. “That’s weird, we were just together.”

    There was a shift and Uncle’s head came up. They stared at this strange spirit. It turned its back to them and Zuko was breathless at the show of disregard. Figures a spirit would not consider him a threat. He shouldn’t take it personally, but he’s been dismissed his whole life. He’s tired of it. A hand gripped his trembling one and he takes a breath. There is no use getting upset over the ways of a spirit. They both studied its small form and Zuko was caught by its profile. The spirit’s back held three repeating and somewhat glowing symbols. It curved in a familiar motion.

    “A turtle,” Uncle whispered.

    She remembers sitting on the cliffs outside Ba Sing Se, watching the Kyoshi warriors train. She remembers seeing a girl with a long braid, with grey eyes she’s never been able to forget. She remembers trying to call out, and seeing those grey eyes flash with recognition, then harden in a way she’s never seen before.     Looking in the mirror's reflection he could see himself as attendants added adornments to his hair. Taking a deep breath to keep from wincing something poked his scalp for a moment. 

    Keep your composure.

    Scented oil was tapped carefully to the skin behind his ear. The smell from the bottles intense when the attendants had to lean closer.

    This was all utterly ridiculous.

    All of this for an alpha he had never met. All of this for a political plot his father had come up with. 

    All of this because of the Southern Water Tribe.

    "And you're surprised?"

    Zuko lets out a wet laugh. "I shouldn't be, should I?"

    "Hm," is Azula's only response. Zuzu has always been frighteningly naïve.

    "You must think I'm stupid."

    While she would normally say, Of course I do, it doesn't feel quite right for the current circumstances. Instead, she says levelly, "You've never been able to think before acting."

    When he doesn't respond, she sighs. "So? What was your plan?"

    or: When Ozai tries to kill Zuko after the eclipse, he redirects the lightning back at him. Azula cares about four people, and one of them just tried to kill another. Now she has to pick up the pieces.

Marriage wasn’t a luxury or some grand display of love; marriage was for convenience and a power move if done correctly. It meant nothing to Zuko. He was raised with the knowledge that he would one day be sent off to live with a stranger for the sake of his nation, and it didn’t matter if he ended up happy or not. His happiness didn't matter.

    All this to say, when his father tells him that he is to marry a stranger from the Southern Water Tribe and use their marriage as an opportunity to spy on the enemy, Zuko knows he has no choice. It's just...he didn't expect this stranger to be so kind to him.
