Summary
Kwai Shuyi is a human mine inspector bound in a contractual marriage to Bai Takshudon, an Ahka-hallomen from the desert nations of Thal. Takshudon visits only three or four times a year, and this marks the fifth year of their marriage.
As circumstances surrounding the TacVas mining colony on Tal-El begin to develop, Shuyi finds herself aboard a shuttle bound for Thal: the giant blue-and-white marble that is home to the Ahka-hallomen, the dominant fully humanoid species on the planet.
