And, well, it's not quite that, exactly, because of course this isn't the first time one of his test subjects has spoken to him while on the gurney… it's just that typically, they're wide-eyed and frantic, wasting every ounce of their remaining strength to pointlessly plead for him and his segments to spare their lives.
And yet, this man is different.
He lies strapped to an operating table beneath the cold, clinical gaze and scalpel of the infamously insane second Harbinger, slowly dying of a stab wound, and yet he remains impossibly calm, the ghost of a smile on his lips and his voice smooth as velvet.
How peculiar.
"It's a shame we have to kill this one," 35 remarks. "I find that I quite like him."

Summary
Spike didn’t die when he fought the Syndicate. Someone saved him, pulled him back into the land of the living against his will. He woke up, bound and cold in some sort of lab, no idea where he was or what these people wanted from him. All he knew was one thing, they’d take their dues for saving his life. More than that, he wasn’t alone. It seemed he wasn’t the first person they’d done this to.
Spike hadn’t died when he fought the Syndicate. Maybe it would have been better if he had.

Callisto wanted to see more.
As he stands in his ruined gallery, his apprentice torn to shreds, and his body weakened, all he can think of is just what he could have done equally to see more and to create that artwork everyone could have apricated. With his request to hear about that horrid and wonderful sights, all he can think of is what he did wrong. In that moment of self-realization, an epiphany is reached. Not at all like the city, and yet a new ruin is upon it. So many different hues and shades to see, all while he learns to find new forms of beauty. Not just in the corpus that he crafts, but in the strange people that he will be surrounded by.

Alastor lived alone in a cabin in the woods, just outside of New Orleans. On his day off from hosting his radio show, he liked to sit by the fire and listen to other popular radio shows. On this particular day, the broadcast ended in screams and static. Alastor soon found that most people in New Orleans had died… and others had taken on a strange form. He retreated back to his cabin and began doing nightly radio broadcasts to document the apocalypse.
In other words, a single broadcast is what brought them together at the end of the world.

He presses the scalpel into the skin, dragging down the central line of Nigel’s chest. The skin splits beneath the blade, and Alex sighs as he puts the scalpel to the tip of the cut, pressing deeper to slice through layers of muscle. His hand shakes minutely, the scalpel steady despite his fumbling grasp on the handle; blood doesn’t pour from the wound he’s made, thickened in the time he’s spent in the morgue than the ground.
Decomposition has already begun to set in, his eyes have liquified into nothingness that seeps out of the open, sunken sockets. Alex pries his chest open, thick blood soaking into the ribcage that protects Nigel’s heart and lungs; he breaks the ribs that block Nigel’s organs from his view, grimacing as the blood coats his gloveless hands.
