Summary
Neil Josten would never have willingly involved himself in a war—no one in his family would.
But military enlistment is mandatory for all eighteen-year-olds.
The Military Institute is known for creating soldiers ready to kill and die, trained to obey without question. That is where Neil is being sent against his will, along with thousands of other disposable youths.
Raised by the resistance, Neil spent his life learning to survive without relying on his ability—a power that demands far too high a price to be used. A power the government would do anything to control.
As he struggles to survive the Institute, Neil begins to realize that there is more at stake than war. The system that turns young people into weapons hides something greater—something that could cost far more than lives.
