Summary
When Daniil first meets Artemy - half-man, half-bull, and entirely unenthused about being the subject of his scientific curiosity - he thinks he's made just the sort of sensational discovery that could save his laboratory. When he tries to study Artemy's rut, however, everything falls to pieces. Artemy, in that instinct-crazed state, claims him as a favoured mate, publicly humiliating him and exposing the well-kept secret of his gender to the entire town. And when Daniil finally crawls back to the Stillwater in mortified defeat, he finds a letter waiting for him, informing him of his laboratory's closure.
With his life in shambles, he wants nothing more than to give up on the world. But the world won't leave him be that easily. Unbeknownst to him, he's about to topple one of the foundational truths on which the town's power structures are built - that a miracle like Artemy can never sire children. Those who stand to gain power from the severing of the Burakh bloodline won't give it up easily. They've killed for it before, and unless Daniil can find a way to stop them, they're sure to do so again.

“So what? The plague is... it's all gone.”
Daniil noted the slight tremor in Artemy’s voice. Artemy Burakh also lost many things in the chaos. He must also suffer from the nightmares. He must.
“They wanted me to die in the plague along with Aglaya and Block and yet, the more information they received from us, the more they urged us to cure the incurable. To preserve the town. Do you hear me? They will not leave a town of miracles alone. It may not be right away… but they will send someone.”

There's no choice but to build a new life and live with the consequences, and so they do. But the events of the plague left deep wounds with the pain and fear of loss ever looming.

The Aquarium was hot and crowded. The theatre smelled of people and a strange, warm, chemical smell that Daniil couldn't quite place. The metal parts of the Kinematograph, an apparatus that had been set on a stand towards the back of the room, gleamed in the lamplight. The grown ups regarded it with glances of curiosity and a humble awe that reminded Daniil of the way people looked up at the frescos at church on Sundays, like this simple box held some great secret.
