Summary
"bonding" is what it is called when two rabbits learn to trust each other, live happily together, and feel deeply safe with one another. crepus realizes that this has happened with kaeya and his son, but he unexpectedly has to reassure them that they won't be separated when an oblivious orphanage director comes knocking to take kaeya away.
it's a good thing he doesn't plan on letting them– kaeya is safely here to stay.
[ specifics of this bunny ears universe: some people just happen to have bunny ears, and said people just happen to display certain rabbit-like behaviors. kaeya and diluc both happen to have these things~ no weird social structures come with it at all. ]

“...Hey, do you need anything?”
I shook my head again. His questions were short and extremely vague; did not seem to point in a specific direction, so when a beat of quiet passed, I assumed he was done. My eyes travelled back to the book, where they managed to scan about 3 lines before I uncomfortably realised his gaze was still fixed on me, “ …Do you?” I said.
Everyone thought that when it rained, he could only make the sun shine brighter – but could stars really still burn if they had already run out of fuel?
or: Alhaitham’s and Kaveh’s days in the Akademiya, from the day they met, to when they ultimately became strangers once more. Alhaitham tells this confusing blond’s story through his own eyes, attempting to decipher their complicated, unspoken feelings along the way.

“Another one.” Alhaitham says.
“What?” Kaveh asks amusedly, his tone suggesting that he heard exactly what Alhaitham said but he couldn’t resist the temptation to tease.
“Another birthday kiss. Please.” The last word is tacked on as an afterthought, in the hope that good manners will make Kaveh feel more inclined to kiss Alhaitham again.
Kaveh laughs again, indulgently this time with a knowing look in his eyes like he can read Alhaitham’s mind. “My junior is so greedy!”

“Well Alhaitham,” Kaveh said with considerable sarcasm. “I wish you the best of luck with your studies. And your social life. Kusanali only knows how much help you need with that.” He then made his way back to his other group, immediately smiling upon return.
And with that, Alhaitham blissfully continued his study with the addition of his soundproof earpieces to conceal what was quite possibly the most deafening voice he had ever heard.
He should have known from this conversation alone that the blond was akin to a tumultuous sound: blocking out everything else in its vicinity, until it was all anyone could focus on. Until Kaveh was all anyone could focus on. Anyone being Alhaitham, of course.
-or-
A chronology of Kaveh and Alhaitham’s time at the Akademiya from the moment they met to the moment they fell apart.

“You were hiding this from me,” Kaveh said quietly. “You lied to me. Why?”
“I wasn’t lying,” Al-Haitham corrected. It felt essential to highlight this. “Omitting, perhaps.” His voice cracked as he said it. He felt like he deserved the betrayal of it.
During an expedition to the desert, Al-Haitham is forced to deal with a bad flare-up of his IBS, which he has been hiding from Kaveh. When he does find out, however, things go a bit differently than Al-Haitham anticipated.

Summary
“That’s a knowledge capsule,” Kaveh said quietly. Normally, Alhaitham would fire back with a rebuttal, but what could he say? Kaveh was right. There was no defending himself against this.
- - -
Kaveh finds Alhaitham with a knowledge capsule and offers to teach Alhaitham anything he wants to learn in exchange for turning the capsule in. Neither of them are ready for the consequences of such an offer.
