Something slams into Wilbur’s back. Hard.
He stumbles forward a bit before every survival instinct he has flips into overdrive —he pulls his hatchet high as he whirls around, aiming his weapon at the new threat that’s coming to hurt him or steal from him or kill him, and god he’s so fucked —
And he comes face to face with a kid.
Said kid is panting, eyes wide with fear, and staring at Wilbur’s axe with sharp, cautious eyes. His hands are raised in the universal position of surrender, and every so often he takes his eyes off Wilbur — Stupid, you never take your eyes off the threat — and glances behind him, almost like he’s waiting for something to come charging up from behind him.
Wilbur hasn’t seen another person in so long. He feels a little breathless.

And that was that. Nothing more to it. A strangely dull first meeting and the two agreed to face the world together, despite not knowing each other at all.

and when they opened, he was in an obsidian prison that seemed to close in on him, an unfamiliar man with a smiling mask vowing to end his life and 'revive him', whatever that meant.

Wilbur didn't care at first, his arms were already scattered with radiation burns. Rust. There was nothing he could do about them but forget, carry on living his life with a reckless vendetta against the world. Nothing was out there for him.
His family were a distant memory, one that he sometimes thought back to on worse nights. When his hands plucked on guitar strings till his fingers were blistered or sung under his voice was raw.
Would they be proud of the things he did, the person he'd become?—
