Summary
After finishing their mission, Ryland Grace and Rocky are on their journey to Erid, when they find a submarine floating in space where no such thing should even exist. Upon further investigation, they discover a man inside whose condition brings up more questions than answers, even after he wakes up. From the beginning, Grace feels a deep curiosity towards the man, together with a strong urge to protect him, while the stranger, who turns out to be named Simon, is deeply scared and confused, having difficulty trusting and feeling safe in this strange environment.

Continuity theory is the assumption that a being can change beyond recognition and still remain the same.
WX-78 does not consider themselves to be the being Wagstaff once knew. Their old name has been erased, their organic body is a thing of the past, and their memories have long since been classified as unwanted data.
But Wagstaff returns to the Constant with blueprints, guilt, and a stubborn belief that there is still a connection between Woodrow and WX-78.
The problem is that continuity is not the same as returning.

I'm alone, looking out of a few xenonite tiles that had chanced to be clear, and I notice something… off. I can see fewer stars than I usually can from this high up. There was a constellation I had traced out some days ago that reminded me of my home Solar System, from the size and brightness of the "sun" star to the dim little dwarf that I thought looked like Pluto. Now, the stars up to Jupiter were no longer visible. Another crackle strikes the air.
"Mɛn?"
I startle so hard that I almost fall over. On the far side of the room sit several command and communication control panels, the same ones Rocky had contacted to inform the Eridians of our arrival so many years ago. The noise that just came through was distinctly not Eridian. I creep closer. It sounds…

The man’s expression dissolved from roiling rage to bafflement. There was something else too though. Grace could see cogs spinning behind the man’s eyes. Something about that answer had stuck.
