“Open the door?”“Yes Lestat! Thank God the deadbolt was in otherwise we’d be nursing some burns right now. What happened?”
“I-I don’t understand?” Lestat said his voice was small and weak. “What are we doing in the hall? I-I”
“Baby.” Louis said with comfort. “You were walking around, trying to open the door. You weren’t answering me, you really freaked me out. I need you to tell me what happened.”
Lestat’s breath began to quicken the same way it did when an anxiety attack began to smother him, spurred on by Louis mounting stress.
“I don’t- I don’t remember.” He said, punctuated with gasps

This is Lestat de Lioncourt’s internal response to the final confrontation with new-vampire Nicolas de Lenfent at Renaud’s, as described in Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat and expanded upon in Symphony of Malice, Chapter 3: Cadenza.
It can be read as a standalone work, with the knowledge that this scene immediately follows a painful and decisive argument between Lestat and Nicolas, and Lestat is remembering it in a non-linear way.
While this story explores Lestat’s grief and guilt, it also carries the pulse of the love that has bound him to Nicolas since they were mortal. A love that is as destructive as it is inescapable.
It contains an extended tender, romantic memory of Lestat and Nicolas’ mortal love... a moment we could almost call a wedding 💕… near the end. Sorry, you have to suffer to get to it! 😇😈

Louis opens his eyes, groggy and momentarily confused. It's dark. He's in his coffin – that is, he and Lestat are in his coffin. Judging by the exhaustion, it's probably daylight out, making his body feel leaden. Although he'd ensured that the drapes were closed and sufficiently thick to block out most of the light, a vampire can be none too careful. He is still emerging from the dredges of slumber when he feels a hand scrabble at his shoulder.
"Louis. Louis, I'm frightened."
That gets his attention.
"Les? What's wrong, baby?"
The pet name slips out automatically. Even after seventy-seven years of deception, pettiness, and emptiness, an entire human lifetime without him, the urge to comfort Lestat is second nature. He is grimly aware of the divide between them like a chasm. They are husbands no longer; they are closer to strangers. But the chord that tethers them is not merely one of a Maker and his fledgling.
