There was water on Donatello’s face.
No, not water. Tears. Composed of water, yes, but also sodium and potassium and lysozyme and lipids. Tears existed to protect the eyes. There was nothing in this moment that Donnie's eyes needed protecting from, but still his vision blurred, obscuring his view of the explosion in the sky and the space where his brother– his twin– used to be.
Oh. Maybe that was what the tears were protecting him from; the reality in which he didn't have a twin.
But he didn't need protecting. He needed his twin back.
OR
Mikey's portal didn't work. Leo is left stranded, abandoned, alone, in the prison dimension. And Donatello, alone on Staten Island without the other half of his soul, decides to do whatever it takes to bring Leo back. Even if that "whatever it takes" involves running away, making a portal, going to the Prison Dimension alone, and dragging Leo out himself.

Summary
Burdens are hard carry. What would you do if not only were you tasked with protecting your family, but also the rest of the world? Could you cope with that?
Leo has his own ways. They may not be "healthy" per se, but they keep him grounded enough to put a smile on his face and pretend that he has his shit together. He doesn't, though. Not on the inside. His mind is a dumpster fire, begging to be extinguished. But he can't share, or he risks burning the ones he loves in the process. Leo would sooner die by the blade of his own sword than risk the safety of his family.
And that may just be the case. -

Sometimes it's easy to forget how different the turtles are from you; they like pizza and video games and cringy tv shows and just running around town, doing nothing and conquering the world all at once. And you cherish those moments deeply. But this isn't one of them. This is one of those moments that catches you so far off guard because it's simply inhuman, impossibly other, and wildly different from anything you could truly understand on a personal level. But you try. You try really hard. And Donnie is good at explaining things to you, but this is so far out of the water it feels like you're in orbit. Alien.

Source - Rise Of The TMNT, a few 2012 TMNT referancesthe war starts and Raph is killed when saving Donnie from a Kraang attack. Leo blames Donnie for it, and Mikey takes no sides. As Donnie tries holding on to his last bits of sanity, he has PTSD flashbacks and meltdowns. Without his brothers support, he goes a little coocoo bananzas. He runs away from their home and joins forces with the kraang. He soon becomes Kraang Prime, becoming part mutant turtle and part Kraang. He produces many clones of himself to fool his family and friends.

Kaiman stared down on Leonardo and said in his deep, nauseating voice: “The code of honor you choose live by is only for the weak and the fools, of which you are both.” As he continued staring at the much smaller turtle, he issued the very real threat: "The punish shock is capable of causing severe harm and possibly killing you. Do you understand?"
*Beep* went the neuro-tech disruptor attached to Leo that was used to shock him into submission.
Leo nodded his head without taking his eyes off the tempting jug of cold salvation in Kaiman's hand.
"And yet you still choose to refrain from taking a life?" he next asked.
*Beep*
Leo nodded his head again.
After that, Kaiman gave him a devious grin and had the nerve to tip the jug up to his own mouth to take a big swig right in front of him, before setting it down on the floor directly outside the glass wall between them.
“You would have earned your water today if you had obeyed my command. Let this be a lesson for you.”

Leo gets freaky space ‘cancer’ from the prison dimension

Dealing with (aka: avoiding entirely) the trauma from all his interactions with Prime in the Prison Dimension is one thing. Yes, one thing he relatively sucks at but who’s gonna lay into him for that? But adding the stress of having a weird ass deadly illness on top of that, along with hiding it from his family, and it seems like the universe DOES want him dead!
Oh well, it’s not like this could turn out horrible right? He just has to find the cure, make it, and completely treat the illness before his brothers get too suspicious! Also maybe find out what it’s called, the place of origin, maybe find a list of all the symptoms, find out how to manage living with it in case there’s no cure, any potential after affects it has if it IS curable, and a couple bajillion other things that could be handy to know!
How hard could that be?
