    Usagi gave no indication that the compliment made an impression on him. If anything, he looked even more tired than before the start of this whole conversation.
    Leo wasn't about to fall for those empty eyes and lack of will to live.

    "That's cool, because the last guy he worked for wanted us dead."

    "See?" Hueso spread his arms. "So it wasn't even his idea. He's a good boy and you'll be nice to him, Pepino, or you'll never get a discount again," he threatened, which was completely absurd and a sign that the whole world had turned upside down after all. Leo blamed the Foot Clan. And Shredder. And Big Mama. "Besides, I'm sure he had a change of heart. Right, Lechuga?"

    They both looked at Usagi expectantly. The rabbit took his time, twirling the pen in his fingers for a moment, before finally sighing. And in that same, emotionless voice, he announced:

    "My boss fucking died."

    “Hey,” Leo’s hand is quickly hooked under his arm, his fingers unknowingly press against a newly forming bruise. “You okay?”

    Mikey nods. He can’t quite find his voice just yet, left somewhere in the bottom of his gut with the rest of his emotions. He feels really dizzy all of a sudden.

    “Somebody get these guys some help!” Someone in the crowd yells out, thick with a Brooklyn accent. “Or, uh, a vet?”

    Donnie is moving forward towards him. “You got two black eyes, dude.” There’s a hint of slight, naive excitement to his voice there. “We should sit down for a sec, huh?”

    Raph is agreement. He doesn’t look so peachy, either.

    “Come on,” Leo is leading them away from the crowd. Away from the applause he’s been so desperate for. He walks away from it all without once looking back.

    To Donnie, the whole incident happened in one short second. To his family, and most especially his brothers, it was the worst 50 minutes of their lives. And, as with most traumatic events, they change their behavior accordingly.

      This is honestly so heartwarming and poignant. I adore this soft introspective into Splinter learning how to be a Dad to 4 little mutant tots that he never expected to have in his life, but who he loves with his whole heart from day 1. The writing is so evocative and expertly chosen, and everyone feels so in character. It's really beautiful.

    “At least let me protect you,” Raph stated, trying to look Leo in the eyes as he avoided the contact.

    “I can’t ask that of you Raph,” he sighed as he stood, and Raph grabbed his hand. “You’re not asking.”

    After the S1 finale Leo does not come out of the wreckage like he originally does. Raph is lost because now he has to be the one to step up, but he can't find himself too. Until that night theres a crash in the lair and a familiar shadow is coming back home.

    They had left him behind; NO, the enemy and time had snatched them away. From the security of their presence, from the security of his mystic and the familiar Hamato Ninpo. He couldn't have resented time more.

    But, at last, his time had come.

    It wasn't his own mystic, crying out to his being extinguished by the profound pain of the absence Michelangelo felt in the form of his family, that extinguished him. No. Despite the pleas of Gram-Gram and the Hamato clan in the afterlife. Despite the echoes of ninpo and the spirits of his only family crying out to receive him not too soon in the end.

    No, Michelangelo simply had nothing left to give, having already given everything he had to be reunited with his family.

    A ritual.

    It had only been a ritual.

    One that brought him to the brink of death shortly after saving New York, once again.

    He waited, his eyes closed, for his end, his bittersweet, sweet end.

    Until it didn't come.

    “Michelangelo?”

    Mikey’s head snaps up like a rubber band, so fast it hurts his neck. His father is standing in the doorway, whole and unharmed and strong. He tilts his head, taking in the probably dumb way Mikey is just standing there staring up at him.

    He’s alive. In this moment, in this memory, he’s alive. But just a minute ago he was dying, he was choking on blood and then he was gone, and no matter how many times Mikey cried for him he didn’t come back.

    Mikey’s chest feels like it’s closing around all his squishy insides like a fist. It’s really hard to breathe in a way that isn’t just desperate gulping gasps for air, so he holds his breath. It’s a good and useful thing that aquatic turtles can do it for a long time.

    “I thought you and your brothers had left already,” the rat says mildly.

    “We did? I mean, uh, yeah, we did,” Mikey says. He watches Splinter’s expression tighten in tiny inscrutable ways, and knows he didn’t do a very good job of sounding normal. So he clears his throat and finds a lopsided smile and tries again. “I just had to come back for something.”
