“Little time for what?” Valjean questioned; the guard said nothing. “You must seek to entrap me into extending my sentence by bringing me to this place alone.”
“I do not.”
“You lie. I see no other reason for pulling me away from the others.”
“I do not lie,” the guard hissed; he looked furious and miserable both as he continued to pace the small space. Something in his tone and in his carriage made Valjean believe him against his better judgement.

“Wait!” Valjean very nearly shouted again, despairing. “You would have me bear witness to this?”
His voice carried strangely, surrounding Javert where he stood upon the parapet, not quite an echo. It settled warmly in his chest, like sunlight on a spring day to his deciduous heart. He could not account for this feeling. It grated against his misery, teasing at something like hope in his own sorry breast. What a cruel trick it was, to try to steal his hopelessness.
“I did not ask for you to be here,” Javert said, his own desperation beginning to bleed into his tone of voice. “You are free to leave me at any time.”
“Surely you must know I cannot do that.”
“Avert your gaze, then,” he said, near to a growl, “and let me be.”

Summary
Smiling, Valjean released his hand, but Javert kept it on his cheek. He brushed his thumb under Valjean’s eye and moved his hand to the back of Valjean’s head, tilting it up. The fire in the fireplace cracked. Valjean’s brown eyes shimmered. Javert pressed their lips together – just for a moment – and when he pulled back, Valjean’s eyes were closed, his lips slightly parted, inviting.
“Tonight,” Valjean said, “let me have you.”

Javert walked out into the entry hall when he heard the door. Valjean smiled at him from a face glistening with sweat — it was a hot day. Javert stretched up and pressed a kiss to his lips. „I’ve missed you,“ he said emphatically and leaned into him when Valjean wrapped his arms around him and pulled him close. He nuzzled his throat, smelling gunpowder and Valjean’s own, strong scent. He breathed in deeply, desire rushing through his body.
„I missed you, too.“ Valjean arched his neck when Javert ran his tongue along his warm skin, tasting salt and musk. „Javert! I’m sweaty and I’m sure I must smell badly. I should clean up, before…“

With that, the doctor nodded to Valjean, and to Javert’s distress, said “You two are a cute couple, but don’t let him around any more bats.” She left.
“What an inappropriate thing to say,” growled Javert.
“Oh it’s not so bad,” said Valjean. “I’ve heard doctors say some really inappropriate things, in prison and out of it.”
Javert didn’t know what to say about that. He knew that Valjean’s past was a sensitive spot, one that if touched without care could cause great pain or anger. Instead of speaking, he squeezed Valjean’s hand again.
“Does it hurt?” asked Javert.
“Yes,” admitted Valjean. “Still hurts, more than I had expected.”
