I like this so much, how it intersects with the events of the movie Casablanca and very much lives in the same world. Shane is quietly heroic while he's also dealing with his own homophobia and shame. Maybe he would never have acted on his desires if he was in less fraught circumstances, or maybe it had to be someone like Ilya who made the first move. Fabulous!
