"No, I—" Zhai'a swallowed hard, the tip of his tongue darting out to whet his lips. "When I thought to offer you a taste of the Twelveswood's bounty, I had not considered the possibility that watching you eat would be quite so… distracting."

It was so much more difficult to say no, now that she knew how good it felt to say yes.

Zhai'a placed the kettle back on the stove and reached for one of the timers arrayed in a neat row along a nearby shelf, part of a set that had been a gift from another of his partners. He studied the grains of sand in the bottom half of the miniature hourglass, tail switching thoughtfully as he pondered how exactly this was going to go, and how likely it was that it would result in lukewarm water and an unpalatably bitter drink. Which would win out this time: his husband's fussiness about tea, or his thirst for something else entirely?

"A fellow conjurer came to see me, ostensibly to offer commentary on the news of our recent betrothal," Zhai'a said while he poured himself a glass of cold mint tea from the pitcher B'alith had left out for him. "He claimed to have made your acquaintance some years back, due to your mutual involvement with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn."
The tips of B'alith's ears went very hot. He had a sinking suspicion he knew exactly who Zhai'a was referring to, and did not especially relish the thought of the two of them having a conversation about anything—especially if that conversation was about him.

The man with the piercing blue eyes and the look of a hunter who'd just spotted his next target had been watching him since he'd first found his way to the card room, studying him with an interest that he made no effort to pretend was anything other than blatantly sexual. The way that intense gaze had raked over the length of B'alith's body had made the fur on his tail bristle as much as it had stirred something else in him that he'd not felt in moons. He could not deny that a part of him found that sort of directness refreshing, especially after the way his most recent entanglement had ended with anything but.

A strand of deep purple hair fell across his eyes; he brushed it back behind his ear and lowered his gaze in a convincing imitation of coquettish flirtation. "I may have stepped out for a bit of shopping while you were resting after our visit to the hot springs."
"I thought I might have heard you leave as I was dozing off." G'raha got his legs under him and crawled to the edge of the futon. He sat back on his heels and reached up to trace the curve of Deryk's waist, hooking a fingernail under one of the ribbons to tug lightly at the garter belt. "Nagxian silk and Coerthan lace? You have impeccable—and expensive—taste in souvenirs, my love."

Zhai’a’s ears went a little further back as he tried to grope for a suitably cutting response. Gods, how did B’alith manage to make the use of a formal title sound so utterly disrespectful?
And, more to the point, why did he get the distinct impression that it was supposed to have been a challenge, rather than an insult?
