It was February 14th. A day for romance, for connection, and — as the Narrator had painstakingly planned — a very important lecture on the dangers of the ILOVEYOU virus. But Stanley isn't listening. Stanley is looking under his desk. Stanley has found the Bucket.
The Narrator has spent years crafting a masterpiece of choice and consequence, but he never accounted for this. He never programmed a "romantic" use for industrial zinc. As the office echoes with the sounds of structural groans and metallic clanking, the Narrator realizes he is witnessing a new ending. An ending he'd very much like to patch out of existence.

“T-that’s good. Please, I… I…” Caine sniffed. His shoulders trembled as he forced the words out. “You can fix me all you want, but if you really think you’re making a difference, let me… feel good.”
Kinger’s heart shattered into a thousand pieces in that moment. If he had a mouth, it would surely be hanging open.
Then Caine opened his mouth, letting Kinger look into his tear-filled eyes.
“I-I thought that by torturing you guys, I...” He rubbed his arm across his eyes in a futile attempt to dry the tears. “I thought that was what I needed to finally feel good, but it was not! Why?!”
Kinger stood up from his chair, but didn’t dare take another step forward when Caine aggressively gestured his hand at him.
“I-I never feel good! I live to make you happy and get nothing in return,” he cried. “I want to be able to feel. I-is that too human for me, too?!”
Or, Kinger manages to shut down Caine at the end of episode 8. He's now trying to fix it, but unresolved issues get in the way.

This started off as a personal vent, and some exploration of the the TADC crew after e8... But Caine did not directly delete. He's in the recycling bin. With Pomni? Huh, how curious. I am also, for some reason, absolutely smitten with the idea of Showtime, so there's that. 😈

5-28-26: (okay, so no one was going to tell me that I was time traveling to August?) ANYwho, finally decided on the name. You, uh, you you say the name of the .hack stuff. And I don't even think I explained why, even. Well, simply put, Caine got deleted, in-canon... but here he didn't. He got _almost_ deleted. Files that are partially deleted... they're just corrupt, are they not? So, yeah. I also kinda wanted to emphasize how that changes not only him, but everyone else. Because no character is coming out unscathed. Like... NO one. Everything changes. Everything corrupts. :P
