Merlin only stumbled into Camelot a few years ago, but he fit himself into Arthur's life so seamlessly, so perfectly, that the thought of him being gone is unreal. Impossible.

Summary
It was panic that drove him from the castle wearing nothing more than a torn tunic and a stained pair of trousers; that, and pain. There isn’t a part of him that doesn’t hurt in some way, that isn’t covered by blood, or bruised black and blue. With every step, agony shoots up his spine and more than once, he has to slow down to catch his breath.
He can’t go back now. He can’t. Every time he closes his eyes, he sees Agravaine’s body lying against the wall, blood trickling from his cracked skull to pool beneath his head. Merlin can never go back after what happened.
Arthur will never forgive him.

Alright, that wasn't entirely true. He said yes Sire and as you wish Sire, with a hint of sarcasm and a pinch of insolence, because that’s Merlin for you. Because after all these years of suffering and hardship to endure the presence of the most incompetent manservant alive, on the top of it all, Arthur was also forced into the acceptance of the fact that it’d take (a mind you) highly treacherous, and entirely not (yet) legitimate miracle to get Merlin anywhere near resembling deference.
