Mike had fallen asleep mid-sentence, something about whether or not one of the movie characters could really pull off that kind of sword technique. He’d been talking fast, voice carrying that wired edge that always clung to him like static. But somewhere in the middle of a sentence, the words had slurred, and his head had dropped. Not to the side, not away—toward Eddie. Like gravity wasn’t pulling him down, but in.
Eddie had just frozen at first. Like, what the hell was he supposed to do with this? He wasn’t exactly a poster child for parental stability. He didn’t know the first thing about being someone’s safe place. But the longer he sat there, feeling the warmth of the kid’s weight on top of him, the more he realized... maybe he didn’t need to know anything.

Summary
Mike is burning up, inside and out.
Externally, there’s a bubbling burn wound carved across his shoulder— but, to be honest, a simple injury is the least of his worries. He’s more concerned with the aggravating, endlessly-perplexing internal dilemma that’s been plaguing his mind for God knows how long; why is he completely incapable of acting normal around Will?
Every time he sees Will— or even dares to look him in the eye— Mike feels this sort of fire burning deep in his chest, hot and all-consuming and completely inexplicable. And, no matter how hard he tries, Mike just can’t figure it out;
What is wrong with him?
(or; Mike has no idea why his heart starts to race around Will. It takes a near-death, some close encounters, and a few aggressive-but-caring talks from Jonathan for him to figure it out.)

Summary
All of Mike’s joints are killing him (metaphorically). Pain isn’t new and neither is this kind, but the fact it’s every joint lessens everything.
Will is asleep next to him and Mike doesn’t want to wake him but wakes him anyway. Or maybe it’s a coincidence, as Will also wakes in pain.
It’s just them at 2 a.m., taking care of each other the best ways they can.
