Summary
Din doesn’t like socialising, though he knows he should try. This afternoon isn’t turning out terrible, truth be told. The oppressive summer heat has broken, he has a beer, and the kid is running around, happy as a clam.
The only things Din has to put up with are the other dads, trying to impress him for whatever reason, the moms whose gazes linger just a little too long, and of course, there’s Luke.
Even though he’s dressed decently; t-shirt and appropriately lengthed jean shorts, every time Din's in his presence he has to stop and actively will himself not to ogle him. He’s burning with the desire to walk over and stick his hand in Luke’s back pocket, shove his tongue down Luke’s throat for everyone to see.
Luke laughs politely with one of the parents and Din takes another sip of his beer.
Their eyes catch. Din wonders if they’re too obvious; secret written plain on their faces under the afternoon sun.

Summer 1983 is dwindling to a close, and Din never expected to be carrying on an affair with someone 20 years his junior. But as summer ends and real life starts happening, it might end just like it began; hot and quick.

"Why is it so hot down here? Guy blinks exaggeratedly, trying to clear the dancing black spots in his vision. He wipes his brow with a shaking hand, only succeeding at transferring yet more grime. He realizes he’s lost the daily battle with gravity a moment too late, as his ass makes contact with the packed dirt below him. Guy tips his head back against the freshly excavated grave wall, and some loose scree from the upper rim trickles down to christen him. Dust to dust. My last fucking rights I guess..."
"...Jasper prowls to the edge of the grave and fluidly drops down to join Guy at the bottom. After dusting off his hands, the alpha stalks closer to the young beta, whose eyes have snapped open at the sound of Jasper’s descent. This close to the exhausted human, the effect of the potent, new scent is like taking a flamethrower to the face. It’s sharp, deep, biting, and smoky, burning his throat on the way down like his favorite whiskey; he can’t help staggering closer to drink in more of the heady scent. The scent that shouldn’t be there.
