   Or; Simon’s been carefully adjusting to his limited time on the Hail Mary, on account of this can only be his ‘7 minutes’ of brain activity before he dies.

   Grace hasn’t had a breakdown, a real one, since he was alone on the Hail Mary. Before he met Rocky. Since then he’s been responsible for himself and for Rocky and for Simon. Rocky’s need for help from Grace significantly lessened when they got to Erid. Simon’s didn’t. Unfortunately, this was inevitable.
