Summary
One million years before the dawn of man, a distant planet was destroyed by the ravages of war. The war was between those who worshipped chaos and those who followed freedom.
The inhabitants of this planet battled for control of the Allspark, the soul of their world and the only remaining source of their life force, which had created their race. The fight dragged on until the world was awash in death, until the ground swallowed whole their once-mighty cities, and until both sides lost the Allspark forever to the limitless stars.
The Allspark hurtled into space… but then its course was altered. It drifted toward a small, curious planet.

“May 21st? That’s a year. Almost a year — round this time, in Kalos, I would’ve been wrapping… wrapping up my…” League Conferences are always in the spring. Ash knows this like the back of his hand.
“Wrapping up your what?” Sophocles tilts his head.
When was the Kalos Crisis? When, exactly, was it? The day, the hour, the minute, the second; sometime in the middle of May, death bloomed in the wake of April showers, and Ash knows when. His body does, because it tenses as if preparing for the rapture.
“...Ash?”
“Nothing!” Ash shouts. “Just realized I’m super hot and need to swim so, so bad — I’m just gonna go! Sorry! Bye!”
Sophocles protests, but Ash’s already sunk one foot in the burning sand, tumbling forward into the beach. Brilliant blue waves lap away at children’s ankles, their natural path disrupted — and Ash careens straight into an oncoming wave, only remembering to be excited halfway into the fall.
OR: A year after the Kalos Crisis, Ash finally feels all the emotions he's shoved down.

What a nice, mild way to put it, that Delia ignored Ash’s calls when he was crying, crying, and hurting so much that Pikachu wasn’t even sure that he would be able to pull him together this time. What a mild way to describe the way that Ash texted and called for a long time after that, despite knowing that she would not answer. What a mild way to describe the abandonment he felt, the anger that the professors felt, and the already strained, already distant tie being stretched even thinner. What a mild way to say it.

The smile grew, and Ash shifted to gather Pikachu up in his arms, tight and warm and fond. “Oh, buddy, you know I love you, right?”
Ash was silly, Pikachu remarked, because of course he knew, and of course he loved Ash back too. They pulled out the malasadas, eating them slowly, savoring the taste, as the breeze ruffled Ash’s hair and Pikachu’s fur. “It really is a beautiful day, huh? Like the universe is smiling down on us.”
It better be, Pikachu grumbled, only feigning annoyance. You’ve saved it enough times.
“Pikachu,” he admonished, only feigning chagrin, “you know we don’t do that for recognition.”
We should still get it, though, went unsaid, but Pikachu’s tail was flicking a little, miffed.
Ash looked up at the clouds, falling back. “We sure have been at it for a long time, haven’t we buddy?”
alternatively: the professors get married and also Ash doesn't tell anyone it's his birthday.
