    Summary

An unexpected encounter with Ilya Rozanov - and a newly changed perspective of him - leads Yuna into a series of conversations with both halves of the rivalry - and slowly into both an unexpected friendship and a new understanding of what the 'rivalry' entails.
Or: (5 times Yuna reached out to Ilya, +1 time he reached out to her first; 5 times Yuna tried to get Shane to talk to her, +1 time she didn't need to.)

Me: I often feel impotent and alienated by the roles society will support Asian women having. But Yuna makes what can be done within those constraints look powerful and meaningful. I'm grateful for the representation and role model.

The difference between Shane’s inner monologue opening the fic, and the one closing it ? It’s almost comical with how it was, indeed, the last fuck he ever had to give, frankly. He is so much more present in what he does in the second one. The first one was extremely relatable (in the way I can remember my brain monologue BEING like that younger and how I am incredibly glad it is NOT anymore.)
He is Still observing, but less…drowning ??? in everything he may or may not be accurately deducing. And his observation feels less self-centred, too. He is not constantly playing “Doom: being perceived ever” in the background of his brain.

Author: As someone who is still in some ways very anxious, but is MASSIVELY less anxious than I was when I was younger, I definitely relate a lot to Shane but am also glad that I'm no longer Like That lmaooo.

    Summary

Ilya Rozanov is on a mission: get Shane Hollander to be DTF. Or fall in love with him, whatever. With the assistance of his helpful team-and-housemates Marly, Connor Connors and Victor St. Simon, many internet strangers via the manipulation of social media, working puppies and a derailed sleepover, Ilya and the boys enact the Fuck Hollander Plan.

Unfortunately, Shane Hollander is perfectly, adorably, infuriatingly dumb.

    Ilya is forced to pivot.

    Summary

Shane watches Ilya shove a hand through his hair, waits for him to meet his eyes. “You pretend to want things, pretend I can have things that we both know you won’t let me have,” he says, his newfound self-esteem carrying him past the point of no return. He wishes he’d never discovered it, because it’s making Ilya’s face do something awful.

“Oh, you mean I hurt your feelings?”

Close enough, Shane supposes, his chest aching again. He goes to lift his hand again, sees Ilya zero in on the movement, doesn’t. “I guess so.”

Ilya scoffs, mean and sharp. “So sorry, Hollander, I didn’t mean to make you get so emotional about a casual fuck.”
Asshole. So many times he has lobbed the word at Ilya in exasperation, reluctant affection and disbelief, but now he thinks it with vitriolic anger. “I think you should go.”

Shane finally decides that Ilya's ability to weaponise sex isn't enough for him anymore. Ilya doesn't take it well, but Shane holds firm. Then they start to text about it. Sort of.

    This Girl Is (non_sequential)

This is pretty much how I read the Tuna Meltdown, but I couldn't express it properly, and I don't think I've seen anyone else put it like this and it's been driving me a little crazy. Like mostly ppl go with 'they said first names and it's too much feelings and Shane runs away', which ok yes, that's accurate. But also. Ilya has been setting the emotional rules of engagement throughout, and Shane had to work out what they were - Ilya may or may not offer physical expressions of affection (eg the stairwell kiss), but if Shane does he risks being fully ghosted for 6 months. He might also, for reasons that are not obvious to him, end up with great but emotionally distant sex that makes him feel kinda shit. And canonically he passively accepts this and they bumble along with this as the status quo for several years, until Ilya changes the rules again. And actually the more I think about this, the reason Shane runs may be more about his own response, bc The Rules say Ilya can be affectionate, but Shane gets punished (rejection) for doing the same, so in that context he, in initiating sex and saying Ilya's name, has Fucked Up. So like, yes he is fleeing the emotional intimacy (scary!), but particularly it's emotional intimacy that (he believes, and takes Ilya's line of conversation about sleeping with women as confirmation of this) he is not allowed to have; ie he has Broken The Rules (oh no, bad!), and/or (which is worse, does it matter?) The Rules have changed and he has to work them out all over again (which is A Lot! And has a high risk of negative consequences when he Fucks Up. If he even gets a chance to work them out, given that he has already Fucked Up right now! Abort! Abort! Flee!)

YES. THANK YOU! You hit the nail on the head with 'emotional rules of engagement'. The fact that poor Shane can only learn the rules by breaking then being subsequently punished for them is just horrifically cruel, even though we know from Ilya's POV that that's not his overt intention. So Shane cutting and running to avoid that punishment (after all, Ilya said 'Shane' in the heat of the moment.... Shane did NOT say 'Ilya' with anything other than intent, BAD) is the only way for him to protect himself in that moment.

i love ilya don’t get me wrong but it frustrated me in the show that they never had him apologize for his treatment of shane was at the beginning or seemingly realize how it hurt him when they had shane do that in tampa after rose.

"they never had him apologize for his treatment of shane " YES, especially when they nailed it when Shane apologised for bailing on Tuna Melt night!!! I also love Shane's surprise at Ilya's like of him, and how it emotionally fucks Ilya up to reflect on that. That is the GOOD SOUP, my friend!

*spoiler chat for The Long Game ahead*

"idk i just wish that aspect of it was acknowledged by the show" and the books, too. YES YES YES, everything you've said is like it's been plucked directly from my head. This is why I put in the line from Shane about Ilya making decisions to protect himself vs Shane making decisions to protect THEM- evident in TLG when Ilya has made the choice to cut all ties with Russia and then is all about wanting to come out because the Cens are chill, adding a whole heap of pressure to Shane who absolutely ISN'T ready because the Voyageurs are awful. Both of them are valid for their wants/desires re: coming out, but Ilya has decided now is good for him, and it's all aboard the train for Shane now, right? RIGHT? WHY NOT, SHANE? Again, Ilya Vs Ilya+Shane, iykwim.
