Summary
Hans and Henry go on a hunting trip together in autumn of 1438, to spend some private time with each other away from the prying eyes of the people of Rattay and Skalitz. They have obligations to others - Hans to Rattay, and his wife and son, and now his grandchildren, and Henry to his father and half-brother and the rebuilt Skalitz - and these short trips are the only brief times they truly get for themselves.

Summary
The revised sequel to Courage Under Fire. Thomas, a former Soldier of Godrick who now serves in Messmer's army, proves his worth when a Tarnished fighter with a grudge and an assassination plan shows up at the Shadow Keep. A very close fight leaves the Tarnished dead and Messmer barely clinging to life, and the fortress defenders too depleted to effectively repel a second attacker. When the threats are finally gone and the wounded are healed, Messmer offers the soldier a promotion - one that would require Thomas to take on a heartbreaking burden for his Lord, but with meaning and purpose.

The overworked and underappreciated Soldier of Godrick - whose name is Thomas, but Godrick never cared enough to ask - finds three bloody fingers in the pocket of a defeated Tarnished, and when he himself is defeated for the first time, he wakes up in the Land of Shadows instead of Limgrave. He makes a deal with Messmer the Impaler to save his own life - keep the remaining fingers and kill one thousand Tarnished, and he will be allowed to live and continue serving Godrick from his remote cavern post in Limgrave. But is there perhaps a better place for the soldier, where he would be allowed to make full use of his overlooked talents, and serve a true demigod?
