Buck and Tommy haven’t even been together for two months when Buck starts thinking about ending things. He hates himself for it, a little. He can’t put his finger on why the thought crosses his mind as he lays with his head on Tommy’s lap while they watch a documentary about a Napali mountaineer’s quest to summit the 14 peaks. It might have something to do with the put upon sigh Tommy had let out before agreeing to watch it with him. Or perhaps it was the fact that his fingers didn’t end up carding through Buck’s hair until he asked him to do it.
Buck knows that he could talk to someone about it. He has plenty of people who would be willing to listen but each time he goes to say something he remembers how proud they were of him when they found out about Tommy. They’re happy for him and already have so many other things to be upset about. He’s made them worry about him too many times already; it’s better if they think he’s finally okay.

Just as his mind was drifting, he heard the sound of a door opening near him. Faint footsteps followed the noise, but just as suddenly as they had started, they stopped. Hawks tried to crack his eyes open out of curiosity (and maybe a little bit of fear) but his eyelids were heavy with exhaustion and he barely managed a sliver. A sad little chirp fell from his lips, spurring whoever it was into action.
"Hawks?" asked a voice.
Hawks gets punished by the commission. The League patches him up.

He wanted his mother to touch him so badly, wanted anything she would give him even if it was just a pat on the shoulder - just acknowledgement that he existed, that his body was more than an unwanted quirk and a vessel for his father’s violence.
He remembers he’d used to hug himself as he fell asleep when he was young, wrapping his bony arms around himself like it could even attempt to mimic what his mother’s hold might have felt like. It would take ages to get to sleep when the weather would seep through the holes in the house and sometimes he’d stroke his own hair, as filthy and matted as it was, just for some pathetic semblance of comfort.
He just wanted touch. Wanted to be held. And as much as he cherished the gift, having an Endeavor plushie wasn’t the same as having a mother.
