Several things had become clear to her during that long, sleepless night. First, that Byron Stirling was the father of Cecilia Gay's child. This she had known already, but the knowledge had solidified inside her, as plain as if she had seen the words written in Mrs. Stirling's family bible. Second, that none of the Stirlings would ever acknowledge the child's existence, much less their relation to it. And third, that she, Valancy Stirling, stood at a cross road in her life.

Valancy would have watched from the pews, wearing her drab brown silk, seated between her mother and Cousin Stickles, secretly seething at the whole affair. There would have been no cause for Olive to go to Montreal or for Augusta Green to share her unfiltered opinions at an inopportune moment, and Valancy would have been stuck at home, clad in brown silk, between her mother and Cousin Stickles for the rest of her life.
