Despite its joyful connotation, Sunday had dreaded this little beach trip. Though, he reasoned it would be good to step out of his comfort zone. He watched the Astral Express crew splash in the waves from beneath a parasol, refusing the water’s call.
On Astropolis, duty called. But through various circumstances Aventurine found himself with a free afternoon on a beach originally reserved for his photoshoot. A perfect opportunity to catch some waves, and perhaps push the buttons of a certain familiar tourist…

Aventurine can’t help but burst out laughing. He didn’t mean to, really, but Sunday sounded so serious and so adorable when he said it.
“Need from you? Hm,” Aventurine clutches his chin between his thumb and index finger. “I don’t know about any needs, however, there is something I have been meaning to try.”

“Glad to see you back among the living,” Phainon says through a yawn, clearly having spent the night in the uncomfortable chair in the infirmary by Mydei’s side. Like he often does.
Mydei’s head hurts. Just the regular kind of pain, easily managed by ignoring it until it goes away. But what makes it worse, is the confusion at his predicament. The memories returning to him in death used to vary in time and people who appeared in them. Why is it always Phainon nowadays?
“Fuck you,” Mydei says, hoarsely. He feels like he is losing his mind.
Phainon’s mouth locks mid-yawn and he blinks down at him stupidly, tilting his head with confusion. It’s probably fair, he hasn’t even done anything to earn Mydei’s ire as of late.
or; Human brain lives for a few more minutes after dying, replaying the most cherished memories. Mydei starts seeing Phainon after each of his deaths.

Mydei inhales sharply. Turns on his teleslate. Slowly dials Phainon’s number from memory.
Phainon picks up on the first ring. “Mydei! Is something the matter?”
Hearing Phainon’s voice, a million wrong words pool at the tip of his tongue. When were you planning to confess that you’re in love with me, Mydei wants to say.
“I’m at Okhema’s museum for the exhibit you told me about,” Mydei says eventually. “It’s been… informative.” Why did you write a dozen love letters to me in the span of three days, he doesn’t mention.

He dredged through months slumbering and waking with a lover and a small checklist of tasks to greet him in the morning. Further back to months of restless nights and short naps through the day but nothing much to do. Then to a time of sleeping the days away in the closest thing he could get to fading entirely from existence.
In all that time, he couldn’t recall a single dream. It wasn’t merely the hazy content of a mind teetering between the sleeping and waking world that was beyond his grasp. There were no interrupted nights nor early morning. No racing heart nor stray thought of how strange that dream had been before the strangeness itself vanished back into the depths of his mind.
Nothing. His nights were empty.

Phainon must have been able to dream. Once. It was just another thing he had lost along the way, up an insurmountable journey, in wait for someone else to take his responsibilities to that final end beyond his reach.
For Amphoreans, sleep comes with the risk of reliving nightmares taken from the small eternity of their memories. The one exception is Phainon, who can no longer dream at all.

His eyelids flutter open, still heavy with sleep, only to snap shut again as the blinding sunlight glares at him mercilessly. A low groan escapes him: there’s something wrong, he groggily thinks, his mind trying to fight off the drowsiness.
He clearly recalls drifting off in the comfort of a lush king-sized bed, bundled up in overpriced silken sheets within the luxury of a Pier Point penthouse, but if the unforgiving firmness of the ground against his back and the stifling heat of the air are anything to go by, that is definitely where he’s waking up to.
“—gel?” a small, muffled voice pierces through the haziness — it sounds weirdly familiar, but Sunday can’t quite pinpoint why. Another tug, more insistent this time, “Mister Angel?”
