Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth spend a night at an inn. Jaime takes a bath.
He was distracted from his musings by his room’s door opening. Brienne stepped through it. She had to bend her head to avoid hitting the door frame. The cold wind had stained her face a ruddy pink. The firelight made her light hair shine; her freckles appeared to be dancing on her skin. She looked glorious.
“Are you cold?”
“How could I be, considering the tropical climate here?” he retorted.She rolled her eyes, unimpressed.
“I asked for hot water to run a bath for you.”
“You did?”
The attention made Jaime’s heart flutter like a maiden’s. -

She’s a goddess. Goddesses don’t flush. Not even for humans who are everything they exist to want. Still, she’s — she’s glad to hear it. She is. She also leaves him enough sweet tea to refill his glass more than once and goes to sit on the stairs outside the motel and breathes in and out, in and out, feeling some of that power she hasn’t felt in ages brim just under her fingertips.
It’s not much, not at all, just fucking barely, and still.
And still, just being around him for this long has done the trick.
For a moment she wonders, how would it be if he wasn’t actually miserable, what if he actually poured all that love on someone who knew what to do with it, and she almost faints again at the thought.
She can’t conceive of it.
It’s been too long.
But — no.
No, she’s not giving in to temptation. It would be wrong. It would be so wrong, and love shouldn’t be wrong. Love should never ever be wrong.

He didn’t miss the way they fluttered shut, her near-white lashes fanning over her flushed cheeks. When he removed his hand, he didn’t miss the quick flash of distress on her face before she remembered to hide it behind a mask of indifference.
Jaime didn’t miss any of it.

Brienne wishes those two had gotten married somewhere smaller, nicer, less grand, where she wouldn’t be required to dress up nor spend days holed up in some super-exclusive-small-island resort doing… activities they haven’t been informed of because it has to be a surprise, Brienne honestly wants to know why those two are so obsessed with surprises in that sense, but it’s not like she could say no. Jaime could have, but a round of family calls later apparently convinced him that not showing up would have created more trouble in the long run than just going through with it, and both invites had a plus one option and Brienne just wishes hers hadn’t because both Loras and Renly know how her situation is –
“We should just pretend we’re an item,” Jaime had said out of nowhere two days after getting the invitations.
“Sorry, we should what?” She had replied, hoping she hadn’t blushed at just the mere idea.Bookmarked by AlexLSF

She hums sometimes. The wench.
Only when she thinks no one can hear her. When Ser Cleos is off picking blackberries or gathering firewood and Jaime is pretending to doze chained against a tree.
He's not even sure she's aware of it. Jaime has to strain to hear her as she hums under her breath.
It's a curiously sweet melody. Wistful. Probably some song about thwarted love that only the homely giants on her insignificant rock would know.
This one yearns, for all the good it'll do her with that face.
