What once was lost may yet be found.
Clambering down next to her and getting grass stains on his jeans that his dad will yell about later, he then tucks himself against her side. He places the photo on her chest. She takes it between her fingers and studies it for a long moment—she doesn't breathe the entire time—then lets it flutter to the grass, like it's too heavy for her to keep holding.
He asks why she's never worn the coat from the photo before, because it's the prettiest thing he's ever seen. She exhales, long and low and unbearably sad, and says that she doesn't know where it is. She tells him that his dad took it from her a long time ago and hid it. She's never been able to find it, no matter how hard she looks.

Summary
Buck hums to himself as he sets the bottle of fancy sparkling wine in the freezer, just for that extra little chill, then checks on the lemon roast chicken and vegetables—it's not the marry me chicken, no matter what Maddie says— and then glances at the clock.
Sal and Tommy are due back soon, the former picking up the latter after they carpooled on their shifts today, and Buck's thrumming with excitement at seeing them.
He's always excited to see them really, can't believe it's been ten months already of them. The three of them. Together.

Being part dog means Buck had different opportunities and priorities growing up, which all led to him becoming a professional therapy puppy. He's excited to help his newest client, Tommy, open up more and start going after what he wants. It would make Buck really, really happy if what Tommy wants is Buck, though.
