    Summary

Fleur Harlow has never fit neatly into District 12's merchant class, her father, Derrick Harlow, owns the butcher shop in town but that doesn't mean the Harlows live comfortably. The meat sold behind the counter is too valuable to keep for themselves, unless Fleur brings something home from the woods, dinner is often as thin as anyone else's in District 12.

Fleur learned to hunt at twelve: she slips through the trees beside Katniss Everdeen and Gale Hawthorne as naturally as breathing, bow in hand and boots coated in forest mud. In the woods, titles like merchant and Seam stop mattering. Out there, survival is the only thing that counts.

Her mother, Charlotte Auburn, was born among the Covey a once travelling group known for music, storytelling, and wandering from place to place before the Peacekeepers forced them to settle in District 12.

None of that matters on Reaping Day: Not when her little sister Etta stands trembling with the twelve-year-olds for the very first time. Not when Fleur's own name sits in the reaping bowl twenty times after years of taking tesserae to help feed her family. And not when the Seventy-Fourth Hunger Games are about to begin.

    Summary

"Oh, little did my mother think
    When first she cradled me
The lands I was to travel in
And the death I was to dee"

Mary Gold Baird has just turned twenty years old when she is reaped for the 74th Hunger Games. She has never felt safe, not once her whole life, and this is just the confirmation of what she has always known.

Peeta Mellark, at twenty one years old of age, was almost safe for real. But that was before Effie Trinket drew his name on Reaping Day, flipping his world upside down.

To survive, they will both have to forsake their humanity, and everything they are.

Haymitch Abernathy has spent the last twenty-four years at the bottom of a bottle. It's his fortieth birthday — a year just as cursed as those that came before — when Effie reads out the name of a Covey girl and that of a Townie boy, slapping a reflection of his past right in his face.

And, for the first time in a while, the District 12 Mentor feels that hateful, wretched tingle in his chest: hope.

    Summary

Cersei Abernathy grew up knowing that there were people born lucky, and others lucky to be born. Cersei herself was one of them, as the daughter of a Victor—a slight against the Capitol all in itself. She knew, ever since she was five, that she was destined to die, even as a young girl she held too much power, and so little leverage in the hands of the Capitol. Yet, never had she thought she would be going out the way her father was supposed to. In a blood-filled battle against twenty-three other armed children, all killing to survive and left to rot in the wildness they were dropped in.

Cersei Abernathy knew she was going to die, she just had never thought the dreaded Hunger Games would be the one slitting her throat.

    Summary

"I've spent all of the love I gave,
we were always a losing game,"

Calliope Whittmore never knew the feeling of true heartbreak until she was wrapped in the arms of her childhood best friend as they said their final goodbyes. It was a long and quiet hug, she could feel the boy shaking in her arms but she had to be strong for him.

"You can do this Peeta," she assured him, "I know it." They pulled from the hug, Calliope gently held his face as she wiped away Peeta's tears.

"24 of us go in and only 1 comes out," his voice shook.

"And that 1 will be you. I know it. I'm rooting for you Peeta Mellark."
